【Title】 An Intuition for the Nano CMOS Convergence

【Abstract】 As the CMOS technology is advanced to sub. 100nm era, where the channel length and associated structures such as contact, metal and gates are continuously shrinked, the limitation in transport physics, process variation, and parasitic effects may become the major show stoppers in the CMOS business based on the Moore law. Convergence of new device structures based either on charge based and non charge based switching and memory elements, silicon photonics, and extremely low power switches, CMOS-bio molecule interaction may be a driving force to continue the semiconductor business and technology in the future. In the area of CMOS-bio molecule interaction, we stress that detailed understanding of the interface physics(and chemistry) between electrolyte solution, insulator and semiconductor system in the presence of the interface charges(they may be DNA, protein molecules, or protonated sites) is important to have a proper design of the CMOS-bio molecule based devices. Especially, DC and time transient behavior of the devices determined by the ions transport in the electrolyte may help to enhance the sensitivity of the devices. We discuss some of the efforts made in NSI (NANO Systems Institute) of Seoul National University in these regards and share some of the intermediate data.
